Demonstrated technology for the production of displays on quantum dots
QD Vision, a subsidiary of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), showcased its employees’ printing technology for quantum dot displays.
The printing method is inherited from the developments carried out at the time at MIT. According to QD Vision, the created technology will allow to master the release of a new generation of displays, which will be larger, more reliable and of better quality than the existing ones.
The prototype, created by QD Vision, is a 32 x 64 pixel red matrix. Quantum dots were “printed” inside a kind of sandwich made of thin films of organic semiconductors. By applying control signals to the matrix, the developers made the quantum dots emit light (a quantum dot is a nanocrystal about 5 nm in size from an inorganic semiconductor).
Quantum dot displays are expected to outperform developments using other technologies, such as organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), which use a similar process in terms of cost and image quality.
