Taiwanese Don’t Believe AMD-ATI Will Not Cut Order Volume

Although quite a long time has passed since the announcement of the merger between AMD and ATI, there is an active discussion on the Internet about the prospects for this deal, which has not yet been completed. According to a source citing AMD CEO Dirk Meyer, the company expects that relations with IBM and Chartered, as well as with TSMC and UMC, will not change.

Earlier, some observers suggested that due to AMD’s own production facilities and support from IBM and Chartered, the combined AMD-ATI company may begin to reduce production order volumes from TSMC and UMC. Meyer denied these speculations and noted that the AMD-ATI deal will not affect the status quo of ATI’s OEM manufacturing relationship with TSMC or UMC, in particular, graphics processors and integrated chipsets will continue to be produced at factories of Taiwanese contract manufacturers.

Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers, in principle, agree with Meyer’s words, however, they note on their part that this situation is due to the lack of AMD production capacity for the production of its own solutions and now the company is simply unable to produce ATI chips. However, if we take into account (being implemented) AMD’s plans to expand its capacities, then the fears of the Taiwanese that in the future the company will start producing ATI products “in-house” become understandable. So, apparently, Taiwanese manufacturers have taken the position of “trust but – check!”

In conclusion of his speech at the opening of the AMD R&D center in Shanghai, Meyer said that actual shipments of the company’s desktop processors in 2021 are likely to be below market expectations of 46 million. This is not due to heightened competition from Intel, but to the slowdown in the global economy due to rising energy prices. AMD is confident that with the support of its customers, including Lenovo Group, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Fujitsu Siemens and (more recently) Dell, the company will retain at least 1/3 of the x86-compatible systems market through 2021 and not less than 40% of the server segment by 2021.
