Fuel Cells Coming Soon to the U.S. Air Force
About a year ago, UltraCell Corporation unveiled a new portable electronic fuel cell that the manufacturer claims is twice the energy density of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). And recently it became known that the first batch of 25-watt UltraCell XX25 cells will soon go to the disposal of specialists working in the Air Force Research Laboratory in Ohio. Presumably, new power supplies will find use in equipment for pilots. Battery shipments due to begin in September.
Recall that XX25 fuel cells are built on the basis of UltraCell’s own technology – RMFC (reformed methanol fuel cell). In fact, each cell contains a small-sized reformer that generates hydrogen from a concentrated solution of methanol, which is used in a battery to generate electricity.
The XX25 is reported to weigh 75% less than the rechargeable batteries currently used by the military. Another important benefit is the reduced running costs of power supplies: disposable batteries now have to be disposed of, while rechargeable batteries must be transported to and from the recharge site. The XX25 element with replaceable cartridge is free of these disadvantages.
In other words, the commercialization of fuel cells that analysts talked about has already begun. The practical interest in finished products on the part of the military testifies to this with all the evidence.
