A robot on a ball

At Carnegie Mellon University, they decided, so to speak, to reinvent the wheel. And very successfully: a robot created in one of the local laboratories uses a ball to move in space, not legs or caterpillars!

The design was named “Ballbot”, which can be translated as “Sharobot”. It is battery powered and can move in any direction, dynamically balancing on a single spherical rubberized metal support.

Robot weight – about 42 kg. The narrow, upwardly elongated shape and the ability to easily maneuver, according to the developers, should make it easier for the robot to live in an environment familiar to humans, which is not so well suited for walking robots and wheeled robots.

The on-board computer helps the Sharobot maintain balance, receiving information from sensors and issuing control signals to the engines, which, using rollers, set the ball in motion. In fact, the whole design strongly resembles a ball mouse in reverse. In order not to tip over during inactivity, the robot is equipped with three retractable supports.

The creator of the robot is Professor Ralph Hollis (Ralph Hollis). The development began as a home experiment, and resulted in a project that received a two-year grant from the American National Science Foundation

The scientist plans to equip the robot with a head and two hands. Waving hands, says Hollis, will help the robot turn and maintain balance. Maybe this is so, but I would not like to be too close to the “robot on the ball” when it turns. Or when his electronic vestibular apparatus fails one day. Still 42 kilograms, you know;)
