AMD-ATI Future Plans (Updated)
Yesterday’s news about the merger of AMD and ATI cannot be called just an event of the day or of the year. Both optimists and pessimists agree on one thing – the deal will affect the IT industry in the most serious way. The official press release announced that the merger will incorporate “AMD’s technological leadership in microprocessors and ATI’s advantages in graphics, chipsets and consumer electronics.”. But we are, of course, interested in the details.
During a conference on the merger, AMD and ATI CEOs said they plan to create a unified, scalable platform with AMD processors, ATI chipsets and GPUs as key ingredients. In terms of its description, this platform is very similar to the Torrenza announced in June, which also involves the exchange of data between the chipset, memory and processors (including specialized ones) with minimal latency, scalability and modularity. Torrenza should become an open platform and will allow third-party companies to develop their own specialized chips. Ultimately, any platform for specific purposes can be built on the basis of unified blocks:

AMD President Dirk Meyer said the company also plans to combine CPU and GPU on a single chip. It is known that on April 12 this year, AMD even received a patent stipulating the use of a single cache by the processor and the graphics core (by the way, this is the first and so far the last patent of the company concerning graphics solutions).
ATI CEO Dave Orton added that not so long ago, the FPU was a separate chip, and integrating it with the CPU seemed difficult. Combining CPU and GPU on a single chip is the same evolutionary step, Meyer and Orton believe. The strange thing is that the concept of integration contradicts the idea of the Torenza platform with its modularity. But, perhaps, we are talking about two different branches of development.
All of the above does not mean at all that we will not see the current developments of ATI. It was promised that the release plans for the next six months will not change. But after six months they will definitely change. What will happen, for example, with the R600, which was supposed to come out just in six months, is unknown. But AMD-ATI is unlikely to “bury” a competitor for the G80. By the way, regarding the future relationship with NVIDIA it was said that there will be no “war”. And the question about relations with Intel, which worries everyone, was answered: “We are not going to block the supply of ATI chipsets to Intel.”. AMD-ATI Strategy – Open Standards and Partnerships.
When asked whether AMD’s capacities would be used to produce ATI chips, an affirmative “no” was sounded with an explanation “why change the usual course of things.”. At least in the next 1-2 years, nothing in this regard will change. Indeed, given AMD’s capacity issues, there is no other answer to be expected.
And finally, on the money side, AMD CFO Bob Rivet said AMD-ATI will save about $ 75 million in licensing and development costs. dollars in 2021 and 125 million. dollars in 2021.
