Interesting results were achieved by researchers from the University of the Canadian city of Toronto. They managed to create a semiconductor device that surpasses today’s “chips” in some parameters – meanwhile, it is simply “drawn” with a liquid on a glass substrate. The description of the new technology includes the term “wet” semiconductor.

The basis of the Canadian development is semiconductor particles several nanometers in size, formed from a special solution, the main ingredient of which is … ultra high purity oleic acid contained in olive oil. A drop of solution was placed on a glass surface with gold electrodes on it. Using a centrifugation process, the liquid was spread over the surface in a very thin layer, obtaining a semiconductor film. The subsequent two-hour “bathing” in methanol left nothing on the substrate except an 800-nm layer of photosensitive nanoparticles.

At room temperature, a photosensor “drawn” in this way is about ten times more sensitive to infrared rays than the best modern sensors on crystalline semiconductors used in military night vision devices and biomedicine. Meanwhile, the cost of “wet” semiconductors is said to be significantly lower than their crystalline counterparts. In addition, the new manufacturing process eliminates the need for high temperatures.
