Scientists have been working on modeling the human brain for several years, and not even the first decade. Another project on this topic is being developed at the University of Manchester under the leadership of Steve Furber.
The project was named Spinnaker. The goal of the research project is to improve understanding of the complex interactions of brain cells, which, according to the researchers, should help to create “crash-resistant computers.”.
As you know, the human brain is constantly losing neurons (according to the data provided by Furbur, the speed of this process is one neuron per second). However, the person does not notice this. On the contrary, the brain remains functional by finding alternative connections for transmitting signals.
In total, the Spinnaker system will include 50 chips, each of which includes 20 microprocessors, 19 of which will simulate the operation of neurons, and the rest will keep a log of activity. According to the developers, each chip will be able to reproduce the functions of about 20,000 neurons. Unlike conventional systems, a computer designed by university staff does not use the concept of synchronization. It is assumed that this will help to more accurately reproduce the work of brain cells. The project is designed for two years.
