Toshiba LBA-NAND – Flash Memory That Is Easier to Use
Electronic component maker Toshiba America Electronic Components and parent company Toshiba Corp have announced the launch of NAND flash memory that supports logical block addressing (LBA). LBA-NAND will be available in a new line of 2GB, 4GB and 8GB models.
Now, physical addressing is used in NAND memory – for access, an address is used that first determines the physical chip, then a block, a page, and then a memory cell. The developers of electronic devices are responsible for the implementation of the controller and drivers that are necessary for physical addressing. In addition, developers have to constantly upgrade the corresponding nodes in their projects to adapt them to advances in flash technology, in particular, to increase the volume.
In the case of logical block addressing, each cell is assigned a unique address, which does not depend on the configuration of the memory chip. In other words, the address of the very first cell is 0, and each subsequent one is one more than the previous one. Thus, increasing the memory size does not necessitate any alterations: it is enough just to manipulate larger addresses. This approach, in addition, allows you to shift block management, error correction (ECC) and load balancing (wear-leveling), which were usually assigned to the host, to the memory side, more precisely, to the LBA-NAND controller. Importantly, LBA-NAND maintains full NAND compatibility at the interface level. This allows developers to migrate to new memory without the additional cost of adapting designs, and use the new memory to upgrade existing designs.
Thus, it is expected that the use of LBA-NAND will help designers of portable consumer electronics to reduce the cost of design work and simplify the integration of flash memory into final products. Since LBA-NAND supports significant volumes – over 2GB – it is well suited for multimedia products such as portable media players (according to the manufacturer, one 2GB chip is enough to record 35 hours of music).
