TI OMAP3 based on modified Cortex-A8 core: success is inevitable
Last October, we announced ARM’s 1GHz Cortex-A8 core. A little later, Texas Instruments announced the acquisition of a license for a promising core, and in May the company presented to the public the details of the first microprocessor built on this core. However, TI started talking about the microprocessor itself (we are talking about OMAP3) last year.
OMAP3 is a family of microprocessors, more precisely, even “system-on-a-chip” (SoC), positioned as the basis of multimedia mobile phones. The main advantage differentiating OMAP3 from the company’s previous generation of mobile processors, OMAP2, is hardware accelerated video playback and graphics processing. It is worth noting that the Cortex-A8 core used in OMAP3 has been heavily redesigned.
This is how the Cortex-A8 core looks as interpreted by TI: green and dark blue correspond to the RLS (random logic synthesis, pseudo-random synthesis of logical nodes) region, blue – converted for specialized tasks, blue-white – SDP (structured data paths, structured data path) or SDP in conjunction with RLS.
So far, TI has not officially announced the technical specifications of the new processor family. According to preliminary statements of the company, Cortex-A8 will run twice as fast as ARM11 and OMAP2. This means that the clock speed of the OMAP3 will be around 660 MHz (the fastest OMAP2 runs at 330 MHz).
It is known that the microprocessor pipeline will contain 13 stages, and the technological process will be 65 nm, and not 90 nm, as in OMAP2. In addition, most integer instructions will execute 1.5 times faster, and media streams will be processed two to eight times faster (thanks to the NEON media processing instruction set). Finally, OMAP3 also includes the powerful C64x Digital Signal Processor (DSP) core+.
Probably, it will not be superfluous to remind readers here that the update of the TI OMAP microprocessor lineup is taking place just at a time when one of the company’s main competitors in the market of application processors for mobile devices, Intel, has actually withdrawn from this segment by selling its business to Marvell. The new OMAP3 can be integrated not only into high-end PDAs and communicators, mobile phones and smartphones, although the upper band of 1 GHz operating frequency (for Cortex A-8) is quite suitable for this, but also into mid-range portable devices, so further strengthening of TI’s position in this market should be expected.
