New addition to the Microchip family of microcontrollers: PIC16F631 / 677
Microchip Technology, known for its microcontrollers, has announced two new products in the PIC family in 20-pin packages. As stated in the press release, the PIC16F631 provides “a cost-effective entry point for migration from 8- and 14-pin devices, while the PIC16F677 brings affordable I2C and SPI hardware support to the small flash microcontroller market.”. Fully interoperable with other Microchip mid-range PIC microcontrollers, making them a good choice for upgrading to more functional and cost-effective 20-pin solutions.
In fact, the new microcontrollers expand the PIC16F685 / 687/689/690 series, so that they can be, figuratively speaking, “inserted” in place of their more powerful counterparts. At the same time, the layout of the board, the control program and the developer’s toolkit can be used without any modification – according to Microchip’s plan, this will give developers the freedom to create systems built using the idea of a common platform.
The microcircuits implement nanoWatt technology, which allows to reduce power consumption when working in battery-powered devices, and In-Circuit Serial Programming technology, which provides programming of the built-in microcontroller memory in the final device.
PIC16F631 / 677 microcontrollers can be used in security systems, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, pocket devices, household appliances, power supplies, chargers.
Some technical details of the new products:
- Flash memory capacity of programs: PIC16F631 – 1.75 Kb; PIC16F677 – 3.5 KB;
- Random access memory size – 64/128 bytes;
- Analog-to-digital converter – 12-channel, 10-bit (only in PIC16F677);
- Package types: 20-pin PDIP, SOIC, SSOP and QFN (4x4mm).
Introductory and serial samples of new products are expected in mid-July. Wholesale price – about $ 1.
