DHX XMS2 DOMINATOR – Corsair Dual-path Heat Xchange Memory
today presented an innovative development – Dual-path Heat Xchange (DHX) technology.
Improvements in performance and reliability will be present in the high-performance DHX XMS2 DOMINATOR series of Corsair memory. PC2-8888 C4 modules (1111 MHz at CAS 4) will be presented in pairs of 1-GB module
(sets 2×1 GB).
The DHX XMS2 DOMINATOR PC2-8888 C4 also uses the Corsair DOMINATOR Airflow ventilation system, which significantly improves air circulation through the heatsinks for cooling the modules. Concurrently, Corsair Announces a DHX Version of PC2-8500 C5 Memory Modules.
Dual-path Heat Xchange (DHX) – Advanced heat dissipation technology for memory modules. It significantly improves heat dissipation on the modules – the heat generated by the memory chips is removed from the module more efficiently. Due to this, the memory chips on the module operate at the best temperature conditions, providing better performance and additional reliability.
Since traditional heatsinks for cooling memory modules have contact only with the upper part of the case of memory microcircuits, when using them there is no direct way of heat dissipation directly from the microcircuit itself. Corsair’s new Dual-Path Heat Xchange (DHX) technology allows for two ways to dissipate heat from the module’s memory chips.
The first, innovative way, removes heat through the pins of the BGA chips to the printed circuit board of the memory module (PCB). Soldering BGA chips to a memory module creates an all-metal heat sink directly from the inside of the memory chip to the ground plane of the PCB. This heat dissipation path is very efficient.
To maximize the efficiency of this heat dissipation path, a special module PCB was created. The height of the board has been increased to make it possible to install a special cooling heatsink. This special heatsink provides heat dissipation from the memory chips through the BGA pins and the bottom layer of the PCB.
A second, more traditional heat dissipation path runs through the top of the chip cases into high-performance, extruded aluminum heatsinks. In total, the module has four cooling heatsinks, two of which are located on microcircuits, and two on the printed circuit board of the module. These cooling heatsinks were specially designed based on the design of the inside of the computer in such a way that their fins are located both in the longitudinal and transverse planes, providing cooling both due to the airflow from the processor cooler and from the fans of the computer case. The result is a memory module with
excellent thermal performance, which is cooler than a module with conventional stamped or perforated cooling heatsinks, providing greater reliability, performance and overclocking capability.
The thermal design of the DOMINATOR modules is optimized for ram air operation. To further improve the performance of the module, an additional airflow can be used to direct the top of the DOMINATOR module. Corsair has developed an optional DOMINATOR Airflow cooling system designed to work in conjunction with DOMINATOR cooling heatsinks to further improve heat dissipation from DHX XMS2 DOMINATOR memory modules. DOMINATOR Airflow consists of three 40mm variable speed fans to provide additional airflow. The DOMINATOR Airflow is virtually silent thanks to its low rotation speed to provide adequate additional airflow.
DOMINATOR DHX cooling heatsinks and DOMINATOR Airflow allow Corsair to guarantee reliable memory operation over 2.5 volts (2.4 volts +/- 5%). The combination of high allowable voltage and reduced operating temperature allowed Corsair to launch mass production of memory modules that guarantee operation in PC2-8888 mode, or 1111 MHz, with CAS latency 4.
Like all new Corsair XMS products, DHX XMS2 DOMINATOR Series modules also support Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP), the new open standard Serial Presence Detect (SPD),
jointly developed by NVIDIA and Corsair. EPP simplifies the overclocking process for novice users and provides an excellent level of control for experienced users.
