OpenOffice and Mac get closer

Mac users will soon be able to get the Aqua version of the popular free cross-platform multilingual office suite OpenOffice.

Since the very first introduction of the Mac version of the suite, OpenOffice has used the X11 system to run on Mac OS X. The X11 implementation by Apple provides the developer with standard toolkits and protocols for porting applications to work in Mac OS X. OpenOffice, when working with X11, although it has the usual sufficient functionality, does not comply with the look-and-feel standards of Mac OS X and does not support some of the system functions, in particular, it cannot use system fonts.

Recently an OpenOffice project.org announced significant progress in the creation of an Aqua version of the office suite that does not use X11 in its work. Lead Developer Eric B.) announced plans to demonstrate a working beta version of the product at the Paris Apple Expo, which will be held September 12-16.
