AMD is phasing out Geode work?
According to sources citing
Forbes and other publications, company
AMD intends to close
design center and factory in Longmont, Colorado, which developed
and production of Geode processors.
Longmont manufacturing facilities were acquired by
AMD at National Semiconductor three years ago. Since
they produced Geode LX series embedded processors such as Geode
LX800 with a power consumption of only 0.9W.
The Longmont factory closure is the company’s second step in moving away from embedded
decisions. So, this summer, AMD is already
Alchemy line in favor
Raza Microelectronics. Geode
was a little faster and more expensive than Alchemy, but how
it turned out that, alas, “nothing shines for him” under the leadership of AMD.
And yet AMD remains in the embedded market
solutions, said company spokeswoman Lindsey Tishgart:
“AMD will continue to support its many
embedded processor customers
AMD Geode GX, AMD Geode LX and AMD Geode NX. Now also
new products based on AMD Geode GX, AMD Geode LX and
AMD64 Embedded “.
At the same time, another representative of the company,
Jennifer Rogenalt told Forbes that several
Geode projects are being dismantled in a hurry…
Marketing Director, Erik Salo inquired about the possible sale of the Geode business
replied: “We are focused on working with our clients and attracting more and more new clients”. He also added that not too few of the company’s potential customers are considering
Geode as a solution for UMPC devices and other mobile handheld gadgets, however, more and more customers of the company are showing interest in embedded solutions with a set of 64-bit Opteron instructions.
The Geode line of processors was and is quite popular. These processors have been successfully used in a variety of applications – from thin clients to super-cheap PCs for countries
third world. But despite the continued success of the line
price wars with
force the company to turn to more profitable market sectors (32/64-bit
processors for servers and desktops), on which
AMD and will focus its efforts.

It is worth noting that both companies this year
systematically move away from the business of embedded solutions. Intel, in its
queue, abandoned XScale, selling the business to Marvell. Business just became small
interest the company because of its low profitability.
