Panda Software: Virus & Intrusion Weekly Report (Week 25 2021)
In its weekly report, Panda Software will inform users about new threats, including the Bagle worms.JP, Bagle.JQ and Sixem.A, Trojan Downloader.JFN, the Breplibot backdoor trojan.R, Browsezilla spyware and a vulnerability found in HLINK.DLL.
Bagle worms.JP and Bagle.JQ comes from the Bagle family, which first appeared in 2021. The main characteristic of this family of worms was the ability to spread massively by email and the huge number of versions released by the creators. New versions of Bagle.JP and Bagle.JQ are distributed in a password protected zip file attached to an email that also contains a gif image with the password needed to open the file. Infection occurs when a user opens a zip file with the provided password and runs the file. Both worms collect email addresses from an infected computer in order to spread to other users and have rootkit functions to hide their files, processes and registry entries. In addition, they disable a number of processes related to security utilities such as antiviruses and firewalls.
Sixem.A is an email worm using the FIFA World Cup theme as bait. When launched, it downloads the Downloader Trojan to your computer.JGP. It tries to get users to open an image that supposedly displays a ‘nudist world cup’, which is actually an executable file with a double extension. To avoid detection, Sixem.A disables a number of system security related processes, including antivirus and firewall processes.
Downloader.JFN is a Trojan that exploits a hitherto unpatched vulnerability in Microsoft Excel that could allow arbitrary code to run on a computer. The Trojan infects systems using an Excel file specially crafted for this vulnerability. When opening a malicious Excel file, Downloader.JFN infiltrates the Internet Explorer process and then downloads and launches another Trojan. The Trojan is not capable of spreading on its own; it requires user action to infect the computer (opening an email attachment or a file downloaded from a website).
Breplibot.R is a backdoor Trojan that opens a communication port on a computer and connects to an IRC server to receive commands allowing remote control of an infected computer. The Trojan makes a request to the netsh command in order not to be blocked by a firewall. Breplibot.R requires user action to distribute (e.g. opening an email attachment or file downloaded from a website or P2P networks). This worm was found embedded in messages linking to an alleged oil scam involving George W. Bush and Tony Blair.
Browsezilla is an Internet browser that can be downloaded from numerous web pages. During installation, it installs the PicsPlace adware on the computer, which in turn connects users, without their knowledge, to certain ‘adult’ web pages. This action “winds up” the hit counter for these sites, which in turn brings profit to the site owners and creators of Browsezilla. The consequences of installing this browser for users are expressed in uncontrolled consumption of network bandwidth caused by hidden connections to these web pages. In addition, users may be unfairly accused of visiting these pornographic sites.
Last week, PandaLabs also warned of a vulnerability recently discovered in the HLINK library.DL used by several Microsoft Office programs such as Microsoft Excel. Exploits for this vulnerability have been identified that can infect a computer using a specially crafted Excel file. This document may be distributed by email or downloaded from the website. There is currently no patch available for this vulnerability, so users are advised to exercise caution with any resulting Excel files, regardless of their source.
