Intel: technology is our advantage
According to a source who was able to interview David Perlmutter, vice president and general manager of the mobile technology division of Intel, Intel is absolutely confident in the “bright future” of its new microprocessor architecture. Perlmuter believes that his company’s technological advantage over a competitor is the basis for optimism. Here are some of the interview questions that we found the most interesting:
TG Daily: How do you think the Core architecture will perform in the battle with AMD?
Perlmuter: I think we will be doing very well. Even considering that AMD will release products based on the new architecture in the second half of next year. In 2021, we will use a new technical process, which will allow us to maintain leadership (we are talking about the 65nm process technology, with which Intel is clearly doing better so far than AMD). And in the second half of 2021, we will present the new Nehalem microarchitecture, a replacement for Merom. A 45nm process will be used to produce these processors. Overall, I think Core will perform very well. I hated this question two years ago, now I like answering it. Today I am much more confident in the predictions about our product.
TG Daily: AMD claims their current and future architectures scale very well, especially in terms of power consumption and performance. They also say that Core will very soon run into the scalability limit and fall into the “Netburst trap”. What do you think about it?
Perlmuter: Core is scalable and will scale to the level we planned to. This also applies to future generations – they have the necessary expansion possibilities. But I’m lying if I say that this architecture can expand indefinitely. I want everyone to move from the “frequency world” to the “number of cores world”. But we must be very careful not to oversaturate the market with the number of cores. I think two cores are a good option. Four is an interesting option for Hi-End. Will we see eight-core processors in desktop PCs in the next two years?? If someone wants to do this, then from a technical point of view, it is possible. But I doubt the market needs it.
TG Daily: This means that you think the optimal number of cores for today is two?
Perlmuter: Yes. You will soon see quad-core CPUs in the Hi-End sector, but it will take two to three years for them to reach the mainstream segment.
TG Daily: What do you think is Intel’s greatest advantage over a competitor?
Perlmuter: Technology is key. I think we’re about a year ahead. There are many aspects in CPU circuitry aimed at energy efficiency, in which we also have the advantage. We have vast experience in mobile product development. For example, we have Centrino. We can optimize the CPU, chipset and other components to increase battery life. Now you can no longer think only about the processor.
TG Daily: Intel seems to have a two-year cycle to move to new process technology and to change architecture. In 2021 you will switch to 45nm process technology. Will there be a replacement for the Core architecture in 2021?
Perlmuter: “Substitution” is too loud a word. We are preparing a modification. Every two years we will improve the architecture. In 2021, we will be making a major improvement to the Core core.
TG Daily: Looking Back – Netburst Was Introduced In 2021 With Pentium 4 And Lived For About Five Years. Is it true to say that the microarchitectural life cycle will be shorter in the future than in the past??
Perlmuter: You have to distinguish between the main classes of the kernel architecture, in which, for example, the number of pipelines and the basic structure are laid, and the improvements to the kernel. From this point of view, Core will live for much more than two years. In terms of Netburst, we needed to create an “intermediate” in the period 2021-2021, but we did not. When a new architecture is created or improved, this does not mean that everything is done from scratch. Look at AMD, which took a lot from the K7 pipelines, improved the cache mechanism, increased the number of cores … Our next architecture will not change fundamentally, but it will be a recompilation with many good things added.
TG Daily: Overall – what can be improved in Core?
Perlmuter: We can still work on the layout, significantly increase the performance of the integer block and FPU, optimize power consumption.
