DRM or how to digitize radio
I am sure that the readers who regularly read us are more or less familiar with the history of the development of wireless communications, in particular, cellular technologies, and are aware of how the transition from analog to digital standards took place. We see the same thing now in the field of wired voice communications – the ubiquitous advance of VoIP telephony heralds the triumph of digital convergence. Digital television is also just around the corner, and perhaps the only area where digital technologies have not yet reached was radio. And although, of course, something was persistently “fastened” to radio broadcasts all the time, no one has yet spoken about wireless (and not broadcast over the Internet) digital radio as a ubiquitous phenomenon. Until recently.
During the IFA consumer electronics exhibition, held these days, STMicroelectronics, Kenwood and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (Fraunhofer IIS) presented a working prototype of a receiver supporting DRM technology (Digital Radio Mondiale, not Digital Rights Management, as it might seem at first glance ).
Digital Radio Mondiale technology, standardized by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) as an open standard, allows you to receive an audio signal of comparable quality to FM (VHF FM) in the lower frequency ranges: HF (short wave), MW (medium waves) and DV (long waves). In addition to improved sound quality and reduced interference, DRM allows the receiver to receive and display data about the artist, recording and broadcasting station.
At the same time, DRM does not require the allocation of new frequency ranges – but the range intended for AM (amplitude-modulated) broadcasts (less than 30 MHz) is used by the technology differently than before and instead of an analog signal, a digitized and compressed (MPEG-4 AAC) stream is broadcast audio data. Currently, work is also underway to use DRM technology for the FM (FM) band from 30 MHz to 120 MHz.
As you might guess, in the trio demonstrating prototypes, the roles are distributed as follows: Fraunhofer IIS – developed algorithms for encoding and compressing sound, STMicroelectronic developed and released the digital-to-analog microcircuits necessary for this, and Kenwood integrated them into the radio receiver.
