Infineon UWB transceiver: for mobile devices, but not only for them
As we have already noted, lately there is already, in general, no shortage of all kinds of UWB solutions that provide high bandwidth through the use of ultra-wideband communication technologies. However, most of them are not compact enough and the question of who will own the laurels of the creator of the first more or less successful solution for mobile devices is still open. It is the solution of this issue that the latest development of Infineon serves, which, according to the source, has completed work on a dual-band UWB transceiver, which can be integrated into mobile devices such as mobile phones and PDAs.
The Infineon microcircuit, made using 90nm CMOS (CMOS) technology, supports the frequency ranges of 3-5 and 6-9 GHz, in accordance with the recommendations of the WiMedia alliance (which, we recall, promotes MBOA-UWB – a technology in which frequency ranges are divided into sub-bands 528 MHz wide). Infineon notes that so far the technical specifications developed by the WiMedia alliance are advisory in nature, but they are ready to start mass production of UWB transceivers as soon as the standard is de facto or de ure adopted. Let me remind you that serious problems arose with the second (de ure) – the IEEE working group, which worked on the standard, disbanded at the beginning of this year, and did not choose as a basis any of the main technology options (DS-UWB or MBOA-UWB) , but this does not prevent the supporters of the technology from promoting it to world markets, but the lack of licensed frequency bands in most countries where it is planned to sell devices with UWB support. However, most of the political issues, according to the forecasts of observers, are expected to be resolved by the end of this year. I remembered all this because the Infineon solution is not capable of operating in the entire frequency range licensed, for example, in North America (3-11 GHz), but it will certainly be able to work in most countries that are going to allow the use of UWB technologies already in this year (European Union countries, Japan, and not later than the beginning of next year – China). And, of course, it is possible to integrate the Infineon chip not only into PDAs or phones, but also, for example, into mainboards for laptops.
In the future, Infineon plans to release a UWB product fully integrated into one chip. The now presented UWB transceiver, which is the first step towards single-chip UWB modules, the company plans to include in future platforms for third generation (3G) mobile phones. And already in the middle of 2021, when, by the way, the political situation around the frequencies for UWB will be more or less clear, Infineon is going to present a UWB solution, which integrates a high-frequency transceiver, MAC and a physical layer controller (PHY).
