The idea that a third-party manufacturer can install “bugs” or “bookmarks” into a microprocessor that controls the activities of a complex military complex, perhaps, excites the minds of the military from the very beginning of the use of productive, and therefore, rather complex microprocessors in military industry. However, if, for example, the performance of integrated circuits created back in the 1980s is quite sufficient to control radar detection and tracking systems, as well as missile guidance, then what about the staff of headquarters and command personnel, who increasingly use portable personal computers? After all, the overwhelming majority of portable PCs today are made in China (and the breakaway from Chinese autonomy Taiwan) and who knows what “surprises” might await the fathers-commanders at the most inopportune moment.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Trust for Integrated Circuits program, announced in June (this program continues the “trusted foundry” initiative announced back in 2021), serves to ensure the security of integrated circuits. And the other day, the Pentagon came out with the intention to expand this program and create within its framework such technologies for the production of chips that it would be possible to quickly organize their production in the event of a supply interruption.
