ClearSpeed breaks 1 GFLOPS per watt
Co-processor acceleration company ClearSpeed Technology has released Linpack benchmark results that claim to set a new benchmark for energy efficiency in high-performance clusters.
The record result belongs to ClearSpeed Advance accelerator boards, which (per board) consume only 25 watts, but add 28.5 GFLOPS (billions of floating point operations per second) performance to a cluster of four Hewlett Packard Proliant DL380 G5 servers. In particular, if two Advance boards are installed in each of the four servers, the cluster performance will increase to 364 GFLOPS, and the power consumption will increase by only 200 watts. Without accelerators, the cluster demonstrates 136 GFLOPS performance. The cluster consists of 8 dual-core Intel Xeon 5160 processors (3 GHz frequency), consuming a total of 1940 W. If we talk about an individual cluster node, it has a performance of 90 and 34 GFLOPS with and without an accelerator, respectively.
By comparison, a four-node cluster with ClearSpeed cards is equivalent to the most powerful Top500 computer as of November 1996.
